Aging Earth clown Tom, desperate to save his grandson Tobin who suffers from a congenital heart defect, is forced to sign a contract with the alien Orven to travel to the emotionless planet Zeta to teach the art of joy. After surviving a life-or-death gamble imposed by the alien high council and foiling the political conspiracy of the villain Vardek, Tom finds himself in dire straits when the medicine he relies on loses its effect. When his ungrateful son Calder tries to ruthlessly exploit him, Tom strikes back decisively with alien gold. Faced with the abyss of losing his grandson, Tom's selfless and boundless love ultimately melts the heart of the cold alien vault keeper Elyssara.
