Queen Nephele, once a fisherwoman, found herself cast aside as King Athamas became ensnared in the arms of his mistress, Ino. On the day of Princess Helle’s eighth birthday, the child was abandoned by her father aboard a leaking vessel. She cried out for help amidst the frigid waters, only to eventually drown. Consumed by grief, Nephele transformed into an avenging figure; standing before a memorial portrait of her daughter, she laid bare her husband’s cruelty and hypocrisy. Overcome by remorse, Athamas collapsed and cast himself into the sea. Clutching Helle’s seashell necklace, Nephele departed alone—her love for her daughter now crystallized into an eternal farewell.
